SMB customers who used Deputy to track employee timesheets needed to import time data into other platforms to administer payroll
Deputy lacked integration into these other platforms and customers were forced to export data via CSV
Deputy’s CSV template builder did not support key payroll partner input formats
This led to service requests where Deputy was investing significant effort into building bespoke export formats for each customer request, or customers having to manually adjust the exported file
I led a cross-functional team to design a way for customers to build their own custom file exporters without breaking an existing interaction model and legacy templates
Kept the original drag-and-drop mapping flow intact so users were not forced to relearn
Added advanced capability as an extension of a new column type
Preserved backwards compatibility so existing templates exported the same by default
Create complex values by joining multiple values
Adds some flexibility when a third-party needs a format that is different to Deputy
E.g. Having a "Full name" column instead of separate "First name" and "Last name" columns
Build a series of simple rules that determine the data being shown in each row of this column
A reliable set of backup logic ensures the column will never break
E.g. Meal and rest break type details (Start time) are stored separately in Deputy but the third-party needs them to be surfaced in the same column.
Adds flexibility to an export format for things like static hard coded values
Reduces the need for multiple duplicate export formats or having to manually update the file after export to change static values
Many formats require a custom header or footer in their file that provides metadata but does not follow the rest of the file structure.
Build a custom row and set custom values to appear in each column
Control exactly where this row should appear in the file so the metadata can be read by your third-party system

Designed the end-to-end WFM flow:
Roster → timesheets → pay run → payslips
Made the first pay run easy to complete (guided steps + clear next actions)
Surfaced value fast with confident review states (so teams can onboard without support)
